Bing-hoo! takes 30 per cent of the US search market

According to Experian Hitwise, lightning does strike twice in search as, fresh from its first quarter successes, Bing-hoo! again grew its search share to grab 30 per cent of the US search market while Google continued to dip. 

Figures showed Bing-powered search, Yahoo! search and Bing search each grew their individual US search market share by 5 to 6 per cent between February and March 2011, while Google lost a further 3 per cent of its search stranglehold.

The analysts also found Bing-powered search held 30 per cent of the US search market in March 2011, while Yahoo! search and Bing search took 15.69 per cent and 14.32 per cent respectively. 

While Google's search share has lessened, number crunchers noted the search engine still holds 64.4 per cent of stateside search - more than double Bing's newly bolstered sum.

But Google is sure to feel the sting as Experian Hitwise data also shows that Yahoo! search and Bing search placed above Google when analysing search success rates. 

According to the analyst, more than 80 per cent of Bing and Yahoo! searches - compared to 65 per cent of Google searches - resulted in a user visiting a SERP-returned website.

The Hitwise data also revealed web users are changing their search behaviours as well as their search engine loyalties, as long search queries of five to eight words were 3 per cent less popular than in the month previous. Shorter search terms of one to four words, however, were 1 per cent more popular, while one-worded search terms were 2 per cent more popular. 

Though Google seems to have its own thoughts on search term length, as Google's Avinash Kaushik recently let slip that the average Google query has jumped from three to four words long. 

Speaking at an invite-only Mountain View mixer, Kaushik also disclosed that 25 per cent of Google's user queries are unique and 14 per cent of Google clicks come from paid search while 86 per cent come from organic search, as reported by Beu Blog.
